Handcraft

rpm books cooperates with some of the finest small handcrafts business in Northern Germany. Concessions due to the demands of mass production techniques. Ideas for the production of the physical product are thought through at the handcraft shops. Their valuable experience flows into the design process.

I believe that the mass produced products that came with the industrialization follows a philosophy that is on a decline. 200 years ago, a product was chosen with much more precision, balancing the needs. And in return it was treated with a higher respect. My closet has been built in the 1930s. The closet works fine, no screws are rusting—the complete closet doesn't even need a screw in the first place. The complete design is so thoughtful, that it still works today—even aesthetically.

This philosophy drives me. The better the product is produced, the more passion flows into it, the longer it will live and will be passed on to next generations. This is what happens to the subjects that I write about and I would like to think that my books will share a similar half lifetime as the cars.

Color proofing during off-set printing

rpm books has built up a network of specialists in the handcraft disciplines of book making. Smith binding combined with digital printing on the most modern machines that can handle all kinds of uncoated premium paper. Handbound covers and slipcases with sharp precision edges. And everything made in Germany. If we want to keep the knowhow in our local vicinity, we have to invest into the people around us. Otherwise the know-how will drift off to overseas. It is difficult to build transcontinental and trans-cultural relationships that are so close, that your partner understands the movement of your eyes, hands and the facial gestures as well as the sound of your voice. After all, we are all human and art comes from passion.
